He is, in a way, sad that dinosaurs have come back to life. I think it's supposed to show Alan's sadness too. I always found that to be a sad decision.

Many things in JP3 are like this and movie offers almost zero explanation for them (new raptor type, explaining where the spino came from/"what else isn't on that list", why the biome is so drastically different, etc). Without explaining this or showing it, it feels like JP3 is just assassinating his character for the sake of plot convenience. No going over any trauma he might have experienced from JP, not going into why things didn't work out with Ellie, why he got into this "theme park monster" mentality, etc. Honestly it seems like JP3 went out of its way to completely bring him down and it doesn't give any explanation for time dedicated to this. It's funny because he seems to still like kids but his relationship with Ellie deteriorated despite this being the only potential for issues in JP (which he got over). JP3 turns Grant into a crotchety "get off my lawn" type of old man who sees no value in what InGen and Hammond did despite having moments of awe in JP. At the end of JP he acknowledges the beauty and majesty of seeing these creatures up close but realizes the danger involved and wisely chooses to leave them in the past. Honestly though I think the first interpretation is the only that was meant by the filmmakers.Īs for JP3 it completely rolls back Grant's character of all the development he had in JP with the exception of not hating Eric immediately. So as the day draws to a close he ditches it. His old career as a digger is over as Malcolm so eloquently put it earlier, he's extinct.

The other interpretation is he's just had a full day of experiencing real dinosaurs brought back by the hands of humans. Having this tender moment with Tim and Lex made him see that not all kids are annoying or hard to deal with at that point he's rejecting that portion of his old self and he ditches the claw.

The most obvious is he himself is changing in the beginning of the movie he uses the claw to install fear in that kid at the dig and then immediately goes on to tell Ellie how he feels about all, or atleast, most kids.

The claw represents his former self and it can be taken a few different ways. We are a fan-ran community and have no official connection to Jurassic Park!
